A little about me…

Click here for an ‘official’ bio…

I wrote and illustrated my first book in grade 2 about an adventurous horse named Monty, and then read every single book in the library about horses and detectives. I haven't stopped reading or writing since (though that was the end of my illustrating career).

At university, I studied sociology and English literature, then environmental planning. I then spent more than 10 years working for non-profit organizations writing content to persuade people to donate money to worthy causes like enforcing laws to help our environment and our health and making sure people have safe places to live and enough healthy food to eat. Now I get to research topics I love and write both non-fiction and fiction books for kids. It's pretty much my dream gig.

A few fun facts…

  • I've had a lot of different jobs. I made salads starting at 6 am every day for a deli, served coffee in a huge office tower, and worked at a busy border crossing.

  • I've traveled to 40 countries, including 3 months living and volunteering in Guyana, where I had the chance to meet a whole new community, make bricks and track Leatherback sea turtles.

  • I love to be outside, and so when I'm not writing you can often find me racing through my local trails trying not to trip on all the roots, or watching the robins in my backyard.

  • I like to grow giant Brussels sprouts and tiny potatoes, as well as more kale than my family would like.

  • When I'm inside, I'm often hanging out with my son reading, vacuuming up after my two cats, cooking something fun, or playing crossword games.

  • My favourite food is kale and Brussels sprout salad. It's delicious! (I also love chocolate.)

  • I've lived in four Canadian provinces as well as London, England, and I now live near the mountains in Vancouver, BC, with my husband, son, and two incredibly fuzzy orange cats.
